Bunker Hill Monument

Boston National Historical Park
On the afternoon of June 17, 1775, as Maj. General William Howe’s British troops advanced towards the defenses patriot forces had erected on the Charlestown Peninsula, legend says that Col. William Prescott told his men not to fire “until you see the whites of their eyes.” This famous order, which probably was never given, has come to symbolize the determination of an inexperienced and ill-equipped colonial force confronting a highly trained army of professional British soldiers. Although they ultimately lost the battle, the colonists repulsed two major British assaults and inflicted heavy casualties before being driven from their position. Today, a 221-foot granite monument marks the site of the first major battle of the American Revolution.
